Questions
[1Co 9:19-23 NLT] 19 Even though I am a free man with no master, I have become a slave to all people to bring many to Christ. 20 When I was with the Jews, I lived like a Jew to bring the Jews to Christ. When I was with those who follow the Jewish law, I too lived under that law. Even though I am not subject to the law, I did this so I could bring to Christ those who are under the law. 21 When I am with the Gentiles who do not follow the Jewish law, I too live apart from that law so I can bring them to Christ. But I do not ignore the law of God; I obey the law of Christ. 22 When I am with those who are weak, I share their weakness, for I want to bring the weak to Christ. Yes, I try to find common ground with everyone, doing everything I can to save some. 23 I do everything to spread the Good News and share in its blessings.
[Rom 12:15 NLT] 15 Be happy with those who are happy, and weep with those who weep.
What
is
Empathy?
Empathy is not losing our own emotions and thoughts by replacing them with the emotions and feeling of others
Empathy is when I can imagine thinking like you think and how I would understand things from your perspective
Empathy is when I can imagine feeling like you are feeling and get a feeling of how that would feel.
Empathy is responding to the other person’s emotions with compassion and caring how they feel
Empathy is being able to perceive rightly and define the emotions of others through their words and body language
Empathy
is when I can put myself in the place of the other person while remaining myself
My beliefs, thoughts, emotions & deeds
Others beliefs, thoughts, emotions & deeds
What
Hinders
Empathy Ø Belief that the thoughts of others don’t matter and not wanting them to have any influence on you ØBelief that the feelings of others don’t matter and not wanting them to have any influence on you ØBelieving that only people who think and feel as you do are logical, good, and normal ØFear of being influenced by the thoughts and feelings of others ØThinking always in a “black and white” view of life and not being open to other perspectives on truth.
Belief in Absolute Truth and Empathy ØThere is only one reality and things that don’t reflect that reality are to one degree or another false ØAbsolute truth is found in revelation found in correctly interpreted Scripture and correctly formulated logical arguments ØTo have people listen to the gospel they must first think we have listened to them in most cases ØSometimes our view is only “part of the truth” and therefore others can add important insights to us. Humility tells us that we don’t have all the truth about everything. ØOpening ourselves to the thinking and feelings of others allows them to feel loved and respected
How to Become More Empathetic ØPray for this expression of love ØBe active in listening ØEcho back what they have said before sharing your point of view ØDon’t be thinking about your reply when they are sharing what they believe but fully focus on what they are saying and feeling. ØUse your imagination to think you were in their “shoes” coming at life from their point of view and seeing in your mind how you would believe, think, and act.
