Best Book

A Book that is good: Baptism & Fullness Spirit
by John Stott

Ephesians 5:17-21 17 So then do not be foolish but understand what the will of the Lord is. 18 And do not get drunk with wine, for in that there is no salvation, but be filled with the Spirit, 19 speaking to one another in psalms and hymns and spiritual songs, singing and making melody with your heart to the Lord; 20 always giving thanks for all things in thename of our Lord Jesus Christ to God, even the Father; 21 and be subject to one another in the fear of Christ.

Filling of the Holy Spirit “To be ”filled” means on the whole, the idea conveyed appears to be that the possessing Power, Divine or evil (used of being filled with an unclean spirit in Mark 5:2), which from one point of view inhabits the man, from another surrounds him, as with an atmosphere.—

“If the Spirit be in you, you are in It” (Jer. Taylor, Sermon for Whitsunday).

Thus, “be ye filled in (the) Spirit,” may be lawfully paraphrased, “Let in the holy atmosphere to your inmost self, to your whole will and soul. Let the Divine Spirit, in Whom you, believing, are, pervade your being, as water fills the sponge.” Cambridge Bible for School and Colleges àhttps://biblehub.com/commentaries/ephesians/5-18.htm

Who is the Holy Spirit One God = Father, Son, & Holy Spirit

A Person who has power but not a power Dwells inside the body, soul, spirit, mind and heart of the believers

Was active before Pentecost

Convicts the world of sin, righteousness, & judgement

Has now been given to all true believers

Gives witness the the Lord Jesus primarily and not HIMSELF

Provides power to share the gospel with boldness àProvides the fruit of the Spirit which is love.

John Piper’s Definition "I think being filled with the Spirit means, basically, having great joy in God. And since the Bible teaches that “the joy of the Lord is our strength” (Nehemiah 8:10), it also means there will be power in this joy for overcoming besetting sins and for boldness in witness. "

Ephesians 5:17-21 17 So then do not be foolish but understand what the will of the Lord is. 18 And do not get drunk with wine, for in that there is no salvation, but be filled with the Spirit, 19 speaking to one another in psalms and hymns and spiritual songs, singing and making melody with your heart to the Lord; 20 always giving thanks for all things in the name of our Lord Jesus Christ to God, even the Father; 21 and be subject to one another in the fear of Christ.

How To Be Filled With The Holy Spirit

1.    Ask to be in a relationship with the Spirit where HE takes Control of all you do.
à[Luke 11:9-13 NASB] 9 "So I say to you, ask, and it will be given to you; seek, and you will find; knock, and it will be opened to you. 10 "For everyone who asks, receives; and he who seeks, finds; and to him who knocks, it will be opened. 11 "Now suppose one of you fathers is asked by his son for a fish; he will not give him a snake instead of a fish, will he? 12 "Or [if] he is asked for an egg, he will not give him a scorpion, will he? 13 "If you then, being evil, know how to give good gifts to your children, how much more will [your] heavenly Father give the Holy Spirit to those who ask Him?"

Paul’s Prayer [Eph 3:14-21 NASB] 14 For this reason I bow my knees before the Father, 15 from whom every family in heaven and on earth derives its name, 16 that He would grant you, according to the riches of His glory, to be strengthened with power through His Spirit in the inner man, 17 so that Christ may dwell in your hearts through faith; [and] that you, being rooted and grounded in love, 18 may be able to comprehend with all the saints what is the breadth and length and height and depth, 19 and to know the love of Christ which surpasses knowledge, that you may be filled up to all the fullness of God. 20 Now to Him who is able to do far more abundantly beyond all that we ask or think, according to the power that works within us, 21 to Him [be] the glory in the church and in Christ Jesus to all generations forever and ever. Amen.

2.  Private and Public Worship speaking to one another in psalms and hymns and spiritual songs, singing and making melody with your heart to the Lord; [Col 3:16 NASB] 16 Let the word of Christ richly dwell within you, with all wisdom teaching and admonishing one another with psalms [and] hymns [and] spiritual songs, singing with thankfulness in your hearts to God.

3.  Developing A Thankful Perspective

20 always giving thanks for all things in the name of our Lord Jesus Christ to God, even the Father [Phl 4:4, 6-8 NASB] 4 Rejoice in the Lord always; again I will say, rejoice! ... 6 Be anxious for nothing, but in everything by prayer and supplication with thanksgiving let your requests be made known to God. 7 And the peace of God, which surpasses all comprehension, will guard your hearts and your minds in Christ Jesus. 8 Finally, brethren, whatever is true, whatever is honorable, whatever is right, whatever is pure, whatever is lovely, whatever is of good repute, if there is any excellence and if anything worthy of praise, dwell on these things. 4.  Be in right relationship with the body of Christ 21 and be subject to one another in the fear of Christ. à[Col 3:17 NASB] 17 Whatever you do in word or deed, [do] all in the name of the Lord Jesus, giving thanks through Him to God the Father.

The Process : True Acceptance of Jesus as one’s personal prophet, priest, and king.

Receiving by faith the gift of forgiveness of sins and the Holy Spirit.

Asking for the person of the Spirit to have power over you and the whole church so that you can bring the fruit of the Spirit which is love manifestation.  (Prayer)

Asking the Spirit to lead you into worship both private and public for it is in gospel centered worship that we become filled with a vision of God’s love in Christ.

This vision of God’s love produces thankfulness in our hearts àThe experience is in a community of believers that are all seeking the Spirit to rule their lives.

Summary of What I believe We need a relationship with the Holy Spirit in which we have surrendered to HIM and HE controls us to accomplish anything in our Christian lives

All Christians are given the Holy Spirit when they believe, and most experience there first “filling of the Holy Spirit” at that time.

The filling of the Holy Spirit is a temporary experience of the always indwelling Holy Spirit.  We can lose the filling of the Spirit but not the presence of the Spirit in our lives.

At times when we are under the control of the Holy Spirit, we will find our minds, emotions, words, and actions more and more in line with the LORD.

There can be degrees of this experience of fulness.

People Before Pentecost were filled with the Spirit

[Exo 31:3 NASB] 3 "I have filled him with the Spirit of God in wisdom, in understanding, in knowledge, and in all [kinds of] craftsmanship, à[Deu 34:9 NASB] 9 Now Joshua the son of Nun was filled with the spirit of wisdom, for Moses had laid his hands on him; and the sons of Israel listened to him and did as the LORD had commanded Moses. à[Mic 3:8 NASB] 8 On the other hand I am filled with power-- With the Spirit of the LORD-- And with justice and courage To make known to Jacob his rebellious act, Even to Israel his sin.

[Luk 1:15 NASB] 15 "For he will be great in the sight of the Lord; and he will drink no wine or liquor, and he will be filled with the Holy Spirit while yet in his mother's womb. [Luk 1:41 NASB] 41 When Elizabeth heard Mary's greeting, the baby leaped in her womb; and Elizabeth was filled with the Holy Spirit.
